You’ve heard about Black Friday. You’ve heard about Small Business Saturday. You’ve heard about Cyber Monday.
Have you heard about Giving Tuesday?
Giving Tuesday is the charitable response to Black Friday and Cyber Monday – the way to kick off the season of whatever holiday you celebrate by giving…to your favorite charitable organization. This worldwide day of giving takes place the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving – this year,
Tuesday, November 29.
On Tuesday, Nov. 29, by making a gift to the Spoon River College Foundation, you have an opportunity to be a part of that movement right here at Spoon River College -- to "SNAP" into the season of giving; to help change lives for good.
We call it #GivingSPOONday.
This year, our goal is 300 separate gifts to the SRC Foundation by the end of the day November 29, 2022. Whether that gift is $1, $1000, or anything in between or beyond, it counts toward our goal.
Pandemic and Inflation
"When I got news of receiving this scholarship, I jumped out of bed, filled with excitement. Money is tight this year, especially with COVID-19 being around, and this scholarship helped me to not have to take out loans. For that, and for those who made my scholarship possible, I am forever grateful."
—Chloe, SRC Foundation Scholarship Recipient
With the rising costs of goods and services, we're all under a bit of a financial crunch. Our community college students are not only no exception, they're feeling the impacts as much as anyone.
Nearly 80 percent of community college students work to support their education, and nearly all are only able to budget to make ends meet under normal circumstances. During the pandemic, many students saw their hours cut. During a time of higher inflation, what money they're able to make simply doesn't go as far as it did.
And when 90 percent of first-time, full-time students at SRC already receive some sort of financial aid and 50 percent of survey respondents reported facing food insecurity at some point, losing your income or having unexpected, increased expenses pop up can mean
the difference between staying in school and dropping out.
"Gifts to the SRC Foundation from generous people like you made it possible for me to repair my alternator and have the gas money to get my family through a particularly rough patch with me still enrolled."
—Shyler, SRC Foundation Emergency Hardship Grant Recipient
Since March 2020, the SRC Foundation has been shifting its resources where possible to fund Emergency Grants of up to $500 to students who have lost jobs during this pandemic, student technology needs to help keep them in class when classes have moved online, and other ways to help students navigate this pandemic and remain on track for their education. Over 75 students have remained enrolled thanks to these grants.
The need continues to grow, and more students apply for assistance every day.
"I want [the donors] to know that they gave me back my hope. I want to tell them that they have restored my purpose for living. They gave me back my dream, and I am grateful."
—Mariam, SRC Foundation Scholarship/Emergency Hardship Grant Recipient
