Take the next step and discover Art at Spoon River College

Why Art at Spoon River College?

History with Vision!

The rich history of the Art Department has driven the mission to offer a high quality education that is affordable to the student as well as challenging to his or her own personal and professional goals. As one of the founding Art Departments in the State of Illinois Community College system celebrating fifty years of experience, the department has a long and clear vision of developing students critical thinking, aesthetic judgment, along with cultural enlightenment through explorations of major mid-western cities, galleries and museums.

The Art Department offers a wide variety of traditional fine art course work as well as cutting edge design courses in computer graphics and photography. Students are challenged and encouraged to discuss their work in order to articulate their progress. Course work in painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, photography, three-dimensional design, sculpture, two-dimensional design and computer design are the foundations of the department.

YOU are the focus of what we do!

At Spoon River College you will be a person that is recognized and welcome on a first-name basis with instructors. At Spoon River College you will experience small class sizes and one-on-one instruction by faculty members who have decades of experience instead of large class sizes taught by a teaching assistant (with hardly any more experience than the student) at many big universities. Your ideas will be respected and challenged to help develop a deep understanding of what it is to be an artist! You will be encouraged to think, talk and live your art.

Read what one of our graduates has to say about the personal attention our faculty offers to the design students at SRC!

“The friends I made and networking opportunities that I had at SRC were invaluable! I learned way more from this small Community College that I ever could in a huge class setting at a major university. The instructor’s personal attention to each of us in class made all the difference in the amount of knowledge I gained from Spoon River College.”

Forward Thinking: Learn to LEAD instead of FOLLOW!

The SRC Art Department in collaboration with the Electronic Design program has developed career clusters, which were designed with you in mind! A career cluster gives the student the ability to meet their needs with many different options of coursework, certificates and degrees. The Art Department is closely tied to the Electronic Design curriculum with many students taking coursework within this department also giving the student more than a traditional art department. With the development of the use of digital media and the ever-expanding growth of multimedia in the arts, the department has embraced the blending of curriculum. Whether you are a high school student or a seasoned professional you will find what you need at SRC!

According to the State Career Clusters Initiative (SCCI) -
Students that study within a career cluster demonstrate:

  • Higher Learner Achievement
  • Successful transition between secondary, postsecondary education and/ or employment
  • Better preparation for succeeding in careers (technical skills and employability skills)
  • Promotion of economic development to increase productivity

With the college moving from an Associate in Arts in to an all-NEW Associate in Arts & Science Degree, SRC has once again demonstrated that we are looking to the future rather than clinging to the past. This new transfer degree will continue to thrust students into successful careers in the arts while providing the best well-rounded education available!

The SRC Art Department helps you “learn how to learn”!

Does this sound like a strange statement? For many it does, but not to our successful students in the Art Department. Students often have come from schools where they have been trained to sit and listen without a high degree of interaction with the subject. Higher-level thinking is not always at the forefront of public education. Here at SRC you will be taught how to look for answers and we will celebrate the fact that not everyone comes up with the same answer! The day will come when you won’t be in a classroom where a teacher tells you where to get the answers to your questions. It is imperative that you learn how to explore, improvise and develop a system of learning that can work for your entire lifetime! Don’t misunderstand, we are here to help you when you get stuck, but we don’t feel like we would be doing our job if we did not help you learn how to learn!
